Listeria Outbreak Leads to Recalls in Forty-Five States and Can Affect Your Pets

January 10, 2024

This major Listeria outbreak has already claimed two lives, hospitalized 23 people across 11 states, and prompted several grocery chains to issue product recalls. Costco, Trader Joe's, Fresh Market, and Walmart are all removing cheese and dairy products from the shelves that Rizo-López Foods, based in Modesto, California, supplied.

The recalled products include various salads, cheese, yogurt, sour cream, wraps, bowls, and skillets. The products were distributed to 45 states, including AL, AK, AZ, AR, CA, CO, CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, HI, ID, IN, KY, LA, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MS, MT, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, OR, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VT, VA, WA, and WY. Through routine testing, the FDA and CDC were able to identify the potential listeria contamination. Visit the FDA website here to get specific brand details and to stay abreast of the situation:

• Product brands include Bright Farms, Campesino, Casa Cardenas, Dole, Don Francisco, Don Pancho, Dos Ranchitos, El Huache, Food City, Fresh Express, H-E-B, La Ordena, Marketside, President’s Choice, Ready Pac Bistro, Rio Grande, Rizo Bros, Rojos, San Carlos, Santa Maria, Tio Francisco, Trader Joe’s, 365 Whole Foods Market.

If you’re feeding your pet table scraps or fresh foods, be aware pets can be affected by Listeria as well as humans. Remember, if you're handling your pet's food from a contaminated surface or hands, you can pass it on to your pets.

Listeria (listeriosis) is especially concerning as it can survive refrigeration and even freezing. Keep in mind cooking will kill the bacteria. Infection can be particularly harmful to pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Listeria symptoms often appear within two weeks after consuming Listeria-contaminated food, although they can occur as early as the same day or as late as ten weeks later. Mild symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, nausea, fatigue, vomiting, and diarrhea. If a more severe type of listeriosis develops, symptoms may include a headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and seizures. Report any related illness to your health provider.

This critical recall highlights the extensive supply chain networks involved in grocery store offerings today and how single-source contamination can swiftly impact millions nationwide. It also serves as an important reminder for consumers to maintain awareness of recall alerts to keep us and our pets safe.
